The Beaver office, where the magic happens, can be found in the warren-like East Building. Notoriously difficult to find (as the room number, E204, gives absolutely no clues as to its exact location in the almost ridiculously convoluted corridors of the SU), finding the office has become part of the unofficial newspaper hazing ritual – if you can’t find it, you don’t deserve to work here. That’s obviously not true, as we’d be removing 90% of possible writers, editors and photographers right off the bat, and to prove it, we’re providing you with detailed directions to our home away from home…
Starting in the Quad is your best bet. Head over to the Quad café, and turn right through the doors that lead to the gym. Go up the stairs, past the gym and up to the ladies toilets, and head through the double doors you’ll find there. Straight ahead is the New Theatre-go up one more flight of stairs (you’ll see an ancient and decrepit photocopier, which it’s debatable has ever worked…), turn left through the doors and we’re the second door on the left! Congratulations, you’re one of a very special few - rumour has it that the reason one of the partB comptrollers never turned up to his first meeting is because he got horribly, impossibly lost and is wandering the hallways still. Our neighbours in the corridor are our fellow media group members, PuLSE fm and LooSE TV, most of the Sabbaticals, and whatever hacks are camped out in the corridors attempting to start a fight with someone (anyone!). A hotbed of gossip, news-gathering and debate, the atmosphere in E204 will hook you from the start. Plus our comfy chair knocks the Shaw library into a cocked hat for naps.
Having bought some brand new shiny Macs over the summer, we’ve got some of the best equipment on campus, but don’t expect to get a free computer on a Saturday or Sunday. This is the office’s busiest time, when the editorial board camps out for days (and nights!) on end laying out the paper and working to our strict-ish print deadline on Monday. Alright, so it’s crowded and a bit grotty, but once you spend a weekend with us here, you’ll see why we love it, and probably won’t be able to stay away. That’s if you can ever find us again…
